We live in a pro-divorce culture. Our children are constantly being taught that divorce is “OK” by television, films and even our evening news programs. And now it is even taught in our children’s textbooks that getting divorces is not only a “right” — but actually preferable in some circumstances.
I’m Catholic. My faith teaches me that divorce is a sin. I don’t believe that the government should be indoctrinating our children — telling them that divorce is “cool” or “legally permissible.” That type of moral decision should be taught within the confines of the family. It is not the government’s job to teach our children what to think about the morality of divorce.

Prop. 8 won not because the voters were opposed to gay marriage or wanted to protect traditional marriage, rather it won because if Prop. 8 didn’t pass, then gay marriage would be taught in the public schools! Scary! That is what turned the tide toward support of Prop. 8., so a similar tactic should win for the divorce-ban initiative.
Maybe John should recruit that guy from Pepperdine who starred in those pro-Prop 8 ads to emphasize that if the anti-divorce initiative doesn’t pass, then divorce would continue to be taught and encouraged in the public schools. I’m sure he would be happy to lend his support! Or maybe divorced-and-remarried Gavin Newsom could be caught on some grainy U-Tube quality video making some speech for those opposed to the divorce ban gloating: “That door’s wide open! LIKE IT OR NOT! Divorce is here to stay and isn’t going away!”

It’s every child’s right to be born into a family with ONE MOTHER and ONE FATHER.
Now, these divorced parents sometimes re-marry quite quickly, and sometimes never. In either case, poor children from these non-traditional “families” can end up with single parents (no father, or no mother!) or, even worse, in a family with TWO fathers (1 biological, and 1 step-father) and two mothers… It’s DISGUSTING!
I wholeheartedly support the preservation of TRADITIONAL FAMILY VALUES, wherein the only grounds for divorce would be something like if the King needed to produce offspring to continue the line, and his wife was infertile. And in such cases, direct permission from the Pope would be required on a case-by-case basis.

Banning divorce WILL help protect women and children from abuse: Abusive spouses almost always show signs of being abusive BEFORE marriage. So, knowing that marriage is forever should stop women from marrying any man who shows abusive tendencies. Rather than trying to change the man, they should not marry him at all! Then, there would never be children born into an abusive family, because abusive men wouldn’t be getting married in the first place!
Starting a family is a responsibility and you can’t marry just anyone! Women who knowingly marry someone abusive are only weakening the sanctity of marriage and they DONT deserve a get out of jail free card by a government granted divorce.

I agree with the (possibly late) president of Family Radio. In his Open Forum program, he said that there must never, under any circumstances, be even any thought of divorce or separation. If a woman is being beaten by her husband, she should be extra caring and affectionate. When her husband wants the “intimacy” of the marriage, the wife should be extra responsive. If a wife behaves in that way, her husband will realize what a wonderful wife he has and become more living and caring. There are no exceptions.
Of course some liberal people would argue that if a wife does the above, her husband might conclude that she enjoys abuse and use that idea to rationalize that behavior, but of course we know that that would be nonsense. Liberals have no understanding of marriage and we must never listen to them; they are always wrong.

I am a teacher and I’m whole heartedly convinced that parents have no idea what they are doing to their child when they divorce. Once again it comes out of selfishness. Yes- I do believe staying together for the children is worth it! Now- I’m not an ogre—I would never condone someone staying in an abusive relationship, and I do think that God allows divorce in the case of adultry—but the divorce cases I know of are far too many times from selfishness. It doesn’t teach our children any values, and it causes major emotional and health problems in many children. Just think—if we don’t slow this train down—all of our future leaders will have emotional and health problems that could have been prevented!

Only thing she said that was sort of whack was that “God allows divorce in the case of adultry” — but other than that, she’s right. We are a culture that has forgotten what commitment means (and I don’t mean that in the evangelical Christian sense of the word – I practice polyamory myself, and I know that ‘commitment’ can take many different forms). If you’re gonna be in a monogamous relationship, though, and you decide to have kids, then you should be damn sure that you’ve got the guts to take responsibility for someone other than yourself.

Biblical morality does allow for divorce in case of unchastity or adultery, but that’s it. Perhaps the anti-divorce initiative should allow for divorce in case of marital infidelity, but the catch is you would never be able to marry again. It wouldn’t matter one whit if you move on to meet the love of your life and want to have all the rights and responsibilities of marriage with your beloved for the rest of your life together. Life is tough. Deal with it. Just like those sinful gays and lesbians, your relationship will be treated as if you are merely glorified roommates. You will not be able to visit your roommate in the hospital. When your roommate dies, his/her family will have every right to ban you from the funeral service, and have every right under law as a final “coup de grace” to swoop in and claim any property they think belonged to your roommate. After all, just like being gay, divorce and remarriage is merely a lifestyle choice unworthy of legal protection, according to the Bible.
Gay parents definitely equals more gay kids. And we all know what that means–more interior decorators and more female gym teachers. I say we should ban interior decorators and female gym teachers! By treating the problem indirectly we can waste lots of resources on something really stupid–it’s the American way!
Gay parents cannot produce kids of any sort. But straight parents DO produce gay kids. If you know that being gay is not biological, then straight parents that produce gay kids are doing something different than straight parents who produce only straight kids. John, you haven’t taken this far enough. When can we finally all have an initiative on the ballot that we can sequester the parents of gay kids so they don’t influence everyone else? Why not study them at length to see how they unwittingly raised their kids differently than parents of all straight kids? You with me?
I thoroughly agree with you in the case of parents who raise all their children gay. But don’t you think we should be more forgiving with those who’ve only raised one gay child but all the other kids are nice and straight? Surely they must have done something right and we should be able to recognise that. We only need to come up with a ratio of gay children over the total number of children to define which parents are to be “relieved” of their parenting duties.

I just want to clear up what the Bible has to say about this. Clearly there are many references to teaching in the Bible, most importantly:
“Come, ye children, hearken unto me: I will teach you the fear of the LORD.”
“Thus will I cause lewdness to cease out of the land, that all women may be taught not to do after your lewdness.”
“O ye women…teach your daughters wailing, and every one her neighbour lamentation.”
“These men, being Jews…teach customs, which are not lawful for us to receive, neither to observe”.
“Doth not even nature itself teach you, that, if a man have long hair, it is a shame unto him?”
The Bible commands us to teach girls wailing and not lewdness; divorce as a crime against God’s Word is a “lewd” act in itself. So we are not to teach our daughters about divorce. Clearly if we teach our daughters one thing we cannot teach our sons something else! So no children should be taught about divorce but rather to know how to wail and mourn properly so they can mourn the millions of babies murdered every year through abortion.
Secondly the Bible says not to allow Jews to be teachers of Romans. Modern day Rome is Italy. So if there are children of Italian descent in your school they should be placed in a class that is not taught by a Jewish teacher.
Boys shall be taught not to have long hair. As the Bible so aptly states it is obvious simply from looking around at nature that men should be ashamed to have long hair (long-haired male animals being, in some contexts, the “swarming animals” proscribed as unclean in Leviticus).
Nowhere, in any context, does the Bible advocate teaching children about divorce or other adult matters! The most important of all is to teach children to fear the Lord.

Banning divorce for the sake of banning divorce does not protect marriage, it just makes it a finite thing like life and death. I am not going to get a divorce, but those are MY values that I LEARNED and APPLIED from the PARENTS that TAUGHT me that. Best thing about it was that my parents were separated. WHY?

There is automatically a safety valve built into the system: Assuming this spouse does gradually become more abusive then he/she will kill you all the sooner, right? “‘Til death do us part” comes much sooner with an abusive partner, so stop complaining and live up to your wedding vows. If you chose a good one: no problem. If you chose a bad one: it won’t be much longer.

I got divorced and immediately contracted AIDS. I think the next logical step is this. Gay people should not get married because clearly it is against God because a man and a man cannot produce a baby. God only wants marriages that produce babies. So clearly every heterosexual married couple who have not produce a child after 5 years should be forced to get a divorce, because obviously God does not condone that union.

Perhaps the best way to lower the number of divorces is to raise the legal marriage age to 35. The person you want to be married to at 35 is much different than the person you want to be married to at age 19. If we don’t have kids rushing into marriage while their hormones are all out of whack they will make better choices about life partners. There will be fewer children suffering from their parents divorce, and the waiting list for hell won’t be nearly as long.
I’m sure the FLDS lobby will want to put in their two cents.
I am perfectly happy with that, but to keep it balanced, that age restriction should be for men only (35 years, which I turned this past December) while it should be lowered for women to 13. In fact, there is a 7th grader I’ve had my eyes on for quite some time and she turns 13 next month.

I must tell you I would vote for this if it qualifys for the ballot. I know to you it is a joke, but I agree with the premise of a lifetime marriage. Perhaps people would think long and hard before marrying. We would save a fortune on family court costs and people could still run to Nevada for a quickie divorce, just like they did a few decades ago. If you market this properly the religious groups will most likely embrace it. Good luck with this and I hope I see it on the ballot in 2010. I support marriage.
Yes, banning divorce in California would save marriage, at least in California where marriage is most in need of saving. California should issue its own passports and make it illegal for anyone without a passport to leave California, and everyone who marries should have his passport revoked. That way, married people could not leave California to get a divorce.
Eventually, this system should be expanded to the whole U. S. of A., so that married people could not leave the U. S. of A. to get a divorce in another country.
