Five years after becoming the first state in the union to legalize gay marriage, Massachusetts remains the state with the lowest divorce rate in the country, thanks to the dedication and perseverance of its embattled straight population.
Actually, according to provisional data, Massachusetts’ divorce rate dropped from 2.3 per 1,000 in 2007 to 2.0 per 1,000 in 2008 — a rate not seen at the national level since before the onset of World War II. (source Bay Windows)
But, like the calm before the storm, it is only a matter of time before marriages start dropping like flies as heterosexual couples realize that if gay people are allowed to marry, it completely devalues the vows they took before God and family.

I’m glad to finally see some legislation that will help our progress towards the past. It is refreshing to know that there are people out there that understand the value of marriage in the traditional sense. I can’t wait until my father gives me away to a man – this legislation will insure that I’m his forever. Now all we have to do is save up the dowery!

You realize, of course, that the dowery you speak of is the cost of the wedding, a bill traditionally paid by the bride’s family (ie, dowry).

What does one marriage have to do with another? Each marriage should be dependent on itself and this is why gay marriage will not affect straight marriage.

First, due to legalization of gay marriage in Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine and Iowa has led to:
- rampant illiteracy in Alabama
- exceedingly high rates of out-of-wedlock pregnancies in Kentucky
- high STD rates in Mississippi
- high scientific and mathematical literacy in California and New York

I think the point is well taken. Not enough time has really passed since Massachusetts approved same-sex marriage to know just how straight people are going to react. The divorce rate may be low for now, but as time passes, and more gay couples are out and about, being all married and showing off and laughing and having fun, more and more straight couples are going to divorce, so they can marry a gay person.

Why do you have to spend your time and energy taking away other people’s freedom? A gay man having the legal right to be let into the emergency as his partner of 25 years dies doesn’t hurt you- that’s all they are asking for, legal rights. If you are for love than love one another and stop wasting your time being negative. Family values are one thing. Divorce is wrong, but allowing gays to marry is what actually lowered the divorce rate in Mass. Seeing that others had to do so much to just get the right to marry encourages straight couples to take their commitment more seriously.
What gets straight couples to take their ordained-by-God marriage more seriously is protection from the evils of divorce. A simple divorce because Jack & Jane don’t love each other any more can result in both spending an eternity being tortured in the bowels of Hell. How could a true, loving Christian allow that to happen in good conscience? Let’s ban divorce to protect everyone’s (except the gays’) souls!!!
