FACT: Every divorce starts with the death of a traditional marriage

s many of you may know, last year California passed Prop 8, “The California Marriage Protection Act.” This important piece of legislation protected traditional marriage by forbidding gay people to participate in the ritual. I think the amendment was wonderful, but it sadly did not go far enough.

Did you know that California has a divorce rate that some have computed to be as high as 75%? And were you aware that every divorce ends in the death of a traditional marriage? Jesus himself said that getting a divorce was not permitted (he was strangely silent on being gay, though.)

The Gospel of Mark, Chapter 10

9 Therefore what God has joined together, let man not separate.”

10 When they were in the house again, the disciples asked Jesus about this.

11 He answered, “Anyone who divorces his wife and marries another woman commits adultery against her.

12 And if she divorces her husband and marries another man, she commits adultery.

So, via an attorney who is a friend of mine, I have drafted the “2010 California Marriage Protection Amendment.” My proposed slogan is “Strengthening the Bonds of Marriage.”

2010 California Marriage Protection Amendment.

SECTION 1. Title. This act shall be known as the “2010 California Marriage Protection Amendment.”

SECTION 2. Section 7.6 is added to Article I of the California Constitution, to read:

No party to any marriage shall be restored to the state of an unmarried person during the lifetime of the other party unless the marriage is void or voidable, as set forth in Part 2 of Division 6 of the Family Code.

My goal is to use California’s ballot initiative process to continue our state’s innovation in protecting the sanctity of marriage by banning divorce. I have registered a domain name (rescuemarriage.org), and I have a comedian friend of mine and an aspiring filmmaker ready to go. We plan to collect signatures in front of Wal*Mart, asking people to help protect traditional marriage.

I believe that their firm belief in the abstract concept of traditional marriage coupled with their lack of intellectual curiosity and poor reading comprehension skills will get many of them to sign. We will then interview them so they can express their views on marriage. We also plan to go gather signatures outside of “Faces” the largest gay nightclub in Sacramento. I think that even the gay community will recognize that this act is a good idea. We’re going to conduct more interviews there.

My hope is that this campaign will take off and I can get people to participate statewide. I may even sell t-shirts and the like and donate the money to a worthy cause…like overturning Prop 8.

But to get all of this going, I need to file the paperwork with the state — and that costs $200. I am looking for 20 people to donate $10 each to help me protect gay marriage, because if I spend $200 up front on this, Patti will kill me. If you donate money, you will be listed handsomely on the Web site as a “Gold Sponsor” and a “Defender of Matrimony.” If you donate $20, you’ll be a “Platinum Sponsor” and if you donate the entire $200, you’ll be my best friend for life — (or if you want to hide your identity from the curious, I understand that, too.)

Please donate if you can, and forward this message on to anyone you know who might be interested in donating.

Thanks, guys. Together we can help strengthen the bonds of marriage to the point that they are unbreakable — just like God intended.

California has a divorce rate that some have computed to be as high as 75%. Even after removing Zsa Zsa Gabor and Larry King from the pool — we still are left with a rate in the high 50s.

Proposition 8 tried to make traditional marriage safer by making sure that Adam Lambert and Ryan Seacrest can’t profess their eternal love to one another. Prop 8 backers recognized that gay marriage was just the beginning of a very slippery slope. Next people would be marrying goats, trees and particularly stylish armchairs.

But Prop 8 only attacked the problem from the edges. I’m going after the heart of the matter. That’s why I drafted the 2012 California Protection of Marriage Act to ban divorce in the state of California. If you can’t get divorced, you can’t destroy traditional marriage.

Previous generations had it right. It’s better to stay together in a soul-sucking sham of a marriage, filled with icy silence punctuated with passive-aggressive hostilities than to admit you might have made a mistake.

Sure, divorces happen -- but they don't need to know that.

We live in a pro-divorce culture. Our children are constantly being taught that divorce is “OK” by television, films and even our evening news programs. And now it is even taught in our children’s textbooks that getting divorces is not only a “right” — but actually preferable in some circumstances.

I’m Catholic. My faith teaches me that divorce is a sin. I don’t believe that the government should be indoctrinating our children — telling them that divorce is “cool” or “legally permissible.” That type of moral decision should be taught within the confines of the family. It is not the government’s job to teach our children what to think about the morality of divorce.

When my child read that Ronald Reagan had gotten a divorce in his history textbook, he cried for a week. Shame on you, public school system! It’s a parent’s responsibility to teach their child about reality — not the state’s.

Hell is eternal -- just like your marriage was supposed to be

As I walk down the street, often people ask me, “John, how can I avoid the hell-fire and torment of eternal damnation?” When it comes to marriage the answer is simple: Never get divorced. Ever.

Jesus says getting divorced is a sin:

Mark 10:9-11

9 Therefore what God has joined together, let man not separate.”
10 When they were in the house again, the disciples asked Jesus about this.
11 He answered, “Anyone who divorces his wife and marries another woman commits adultery against her.
12 And if she divorces her husband and marries another man, she commits adultery.

Interestingly, Jesus never once even mentioned homosexuals or homosexual behavior. I assume this was some sort of clerical oversight that will be rectified during the end of days as described in the Book of Revelation. Perhaps during Satan’s 1,000 year reign. I’ll get back to you on that one.
